Pooyan is a 1982 action game originally developed by Konami and later brought to the NES by Hudson Soft. You play as Mama Pig, riding a basket elevator up and down the side of a cliff to defend her piglets from a pack of wolves. Armed with a bow and arrows, you must shoot down the wolves’ balloons before they land and swarm you. The game alternates between stages where wolves descend from the trees and stages where they ascend to reach a boulder at the top.
How to play
Use the up and down arrow keys (D-pad) to move your basket elevator vertically. Press Z (A button) or X (B button) to shoot arrows and pop the wolves’ balloons. At the top of the elevator shaft, you can occasionally grab a piece of meat; throwing it with the attack button curves it downward, knocking out multiple wolves at once if timed correctly. If wolves land safely in the first stage, they will bite you from behind the cliff edge; if they reach the top in the second stage, they will drop a boulder on you.
Tips
- Wait until multiple wolves are lined up vertically or dropping in a cluster before throwing the meat, as it can clear a large group and score bonus points.
- Wolves ascending in the second stage can throw rocks at you. Be prepared to quickly change direction to dodge them while continuing your attack.
- Watch out for pink balloonsโthey take more than one hit to pop.
