Game description:

Released for the NES in 1988, 1943 – The Battle of Midway is Capcom’s classic vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up and the direct sequel to 1942. Piloting a P-38 Lightning fighter plane over the Pacific Ocean, you must battle through waves of enemy aircraft and sink a fleet of massive naval battleships.

How to Play

Your objective is to reach the end of each stage and destroy the boss vessel. Unlike traditional shooters that use a lives system, 1943 relies on an energy meter that serves as both your health and a timer. Your energy slowly depletes as you fly and takes a massive hit if you collide with enemies or bullets. For browser play, use the Arrow keys to move, Z to shoot (B button), and X to execute an evasive loop or a screen-clearing mega crash (A button). Press Enter to start the game.

Tips

  • Cycle Your Power-ups: Destroying a complete formation of red planes drops a power-up item. If you shoot the item before picking it up, it will cycle through different weapons (like the Shotgun or 3-Way) and energy refills.
  • Manage Your Energy: Because your mega crash attack (X) consumes a portion of your energy meter, use it sparingly as a last resort to survive unavoidable damage.
  • Charge Your Shots: If you hold down the fire button (Z) and release it, you can fire a powerful charged attack to quickly take down tougher enemies without wasting energy.
