Game description:

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber is a real-time tactical role-playing game developed by Quest and released for the Nintendo 64 in 2000. As a major installment in the renowned Ogre Battle series, the game puts players in the role of Magnus Gallant, a military academy graduate who becomes entangled in a civil war within the Palatine Kingdom. It combines strategic army management across a sprawling world map with automated, formation-based tactical encounters.

How to Play

The core gameplay revolves around organizing battalions of troops and directing them in real-time across the map to liberate towns and intercept enemy units. When two units clash, combat plays out automatically based on the formation and character classes you have assigned. Navigate the map and menus using the Nintendo 64 D-pad or analog stick. Use the A button to select units and confirm commands, the B button to cancel, and the Start button to pause or access the main menu. In the browser, these are typically mapped to the arrow keys, with Z, X, and Enter acting as your primary action buttons.

Tips

Pay close attention to your characters’ alignment stat (ranging from Chaos to Lawful), as it dictates which advanced classes they can promote into. Alignment shifts based on their actions and the levels of the enemies they defeat in battle. Additionally, try to liberate towns using units whose alignment matches the town’s local morale; doing so will raise your Chaos Frame, a hidden metric that ultimately determines which of the game’s multiple endings you receive.
