Game description:

Mario Kart 64 brought Nintendo’s hit racing series into full 3D in 1996. Developed for the Nintendo 64, it expanded the original formula with elevation changes, wide tracks like Toad’s Turnpike and Wario Stadium, and four-player split-screen multiplayer. This entry also introduced the now-infamous blue shell to the item lineup.

How to play

Select a character from the Mario cast and compete in Grand Prix cups, Time Trials, or Battle mode. Drive over item boxes to get weapons and boosts. On a standard N64 layout, use the analog stick to steer, A to accelerate, B to brake, R to hop and initiate drifts, and Z to use your items. In the browser, these are typically mapped to your arrow keys and the Z, X, C, and Shift keys.

Tips

  • Hold down the item button to trail shells or bananas behind your kart. This acts as a shield that blocks incoming red shells.
  • To get a mini-turbo boost, press and hold R while turning to start a drift. Flick the steering stick left and right until the smoke turns orange, then release R for a burst of speed.
