Mario Kart 64 – Amped Up is a massive ROM hack of the Nintendo 64 classic created by modder Litronom. Rather than just adding a few tracks, it modernises the entire game by replacing the original pre-rendered 2D sprites with fully animated 3D character models and adding a wealth of new content. It features 16 brand-new courses drawn from other Mario Kart entries and Nintendo franchises, alongside an original soundtrack and an in-game options menu to customise your experience.
How to Play
The objective remains the same: outpace your opponents and use items to secure first place. Amped Up introduces new ways to race, including an Elimination Mode and a Coin Mode where collecting scattered coins increases your top speed and eventually rewards a Starman. You can navigate the menus and steer your kart using the standard N64 controls, typically mapped in the browser to the Arrow Keys for movement, Z to accelerate, X to brake or drift, and C to use items.
Tips
- Explore the Options Menu: Check the title screen options to toggle specific settings, such as enabling Mini Turbos or adjusting the difficulty to suit your playstyle.
- Prioritise Coins in Coin Mode: Your top speed directly scales with your coin count, making it crucial to collect them early in the race before engaging other racers.
