Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber is a real-time tactical role-playing game developed by Quest Corporation and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. You take on the role of Magnus Gallant, a young military academy graduate caught in the middle of a civil war against the Holy Lodis Empire. Instead of controlling single characters, you command entire legions composed of different classes, directing them across expansive maps in real-time to capture strongholds and engage enemy units in semi-automated combat.
How to Play
The main objective in each chapter is to capture the enemy headquarters while defending your own base. You move units on the map in real-time, and when two opposing units collide, an isometric battle screen opens where combat plays out automatically based on your characters’ placement and classes. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor or navigate menus. Press Z to confirm actions and X to cancel. Use the Enter key to open the main menu to manage your troops, and use Shift (mapped to the N64 Z-trigger) to fast-forward time on the map.
Tips
- Manage your Chaos Frame: Your alignment affects the game’s ending. To raise your Chaos Frame, make sure the units liberating a town have an alignment that matches the town’s overall morale.
- Optimize unit placement: Characters execute entirely different attacks depending on whether they are placed in the front, middle, or back row of a 3×3 grid. Experiment with placements to maximize your damage output or healing abilities.
- Watch out for fatigue: Units moving long distances or fighting consecutive battles will become fatigued, reducing their effectiveness. Have them set up camp to recover, but remember they take more damage if attacked while resting.
