North & South is a 1990 strategy and action hybrid for the NES developed by Infogrames. Based on the Belgian comic series “Les Tuniques Bleues”, it places you in command of either the Union or Confederate army during the American Civil War. Players navigate a strategic map to capture territories and secure railroads, while engaging in real-time, fast-paced minigames to resolve skirmishes, attack forts, and intercept supply trains.
How to play
Your goal is to eliminate the opposing army’s forces from the map. During battles, you command infantry, cavalry, and artillery units in real-time. By default on the NES emulator, use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to fire your cannons or attack with infantry/cavalry, and X to switch which unit type you are actively controlling. In the side-scrolling segments for forts and trains, Z jumps and X attacks.
Tips
- When controlling artillery, pay close attention to the firing gauge; releasing at the right time is crucial for hitting enemy units across the battlefield.
- Cavalry is highly effective for quick charges against infantry, but they cannot stop once they start moving, so aim carefully.
- Secure territories with train stations early; holding an unbroken railway line generates extra gold for reinforcements.
