North & South is a 1989 DOS strategy and action game developed by Infogrames, based on the Belgian comic book series Les Tuniques Bleues. Set during the American Civil War, players move their armies across a strategic map of the United States to capture territory and resources. When two opposing armies meet, the game shifts to a real-time arcade battle where you command infantry, cavalry, and artillery units on the field.
How to Play
Your objective is to eliminate the opposing army’s forces from the strategic map. Controlling states with train stations allows the train to pass through safely, granting you the gold needed to purchase reinforcements. In addition to the large-scale battles, you will also face timed, side-scrolling platforming sequences when attempting to capture enemy forts or rob their trains. The game relies on standard DOS keyboard controls, using the arrow keys for movement and the action keys (such as Space or Enter) to confirm actions, fire, or jump. For full screen, press Right Alt + Enter.
Tips
- Protect the railway: The train only brings gold if you control an unbroken chain of stations. Prioritize defending these key territories.
- Break the bridges: During the real-time battle phases, you can use your cannons to destroy bridges. This effectively funnels enemy troops into chokepoints or blocks their advance.
- Know when to retreat: If a battle is going poorly, you can preserve your surviving troops by moving them off your side of the screen to retreat.
