North & South for the NES is a unique hybrid of grand strategy and arcade action set during the American Civil War. Developed by Infogrames and released in 1990, the game is based on the Belgian comic series Les Tuniques Bleues. Players command either the Union or Confederate armies, moving units across a risk-style strategic map before settling conflicts through fast-paced, real-time battlefield skirmishes and side-scrolling platforming sequences during fort or train raids.
How to Play
The objective is to eliminate the opposing army and conquer all territories on the board to secure victory. Use the Arrow keys to move your units on the strategic map and maneuver during combat. Z and X serve as the NES A and B buttons, allowing you to jump, fire weapons, or switch your active division (cavalry, infantry, or artillery) during open battles. Press Enter for Start to pause.
Tips
During battlefield encounters, prioritize using your cannons to thin out enemy lines from a distance before their cavalry can close the gap. When attempting to capture a fort or rob a train, speed is criticalโfocus on dodging hazards and running past guards rather than fighting them to reach the goal before the timer runs out.
