Game description:

Developed and published by Nintendo for the NES in 1986, Metroid is a pioneering action-platformer that introduced players to non-linear exploration. Rather than moving left-to-right through disconnected stages, you explore the interconnected, labyrinthine alien world of Zebes, hunting for permanent ability upgrades to reach new areas and ultimately stop the Space Pirates.

How to play

Your goal is to descend deep into Zebes, defeat the bosses Kraid and Ridley, and destroy Mother Brain. You begin with minimal health and a short-range beam, and must find hidden statues holding power-ups like the Morph Ball, Bombs, and missiles to progress.

Tips

  • Bomb everything. Many vital power-ups and progression paths are hidden behind seemingly solid walls and floors that can be destroyed with Bombs.
  • The game lacks an in-game map; make a physical map or mental notes of colored doors you cannot open yet.
  • Grinding enemies for health and missiles is necessary after respawning or getting password continues. Flying enemies emerging from pipes are the most consistent source.
