Mega Man 4 – Free of Charge is a 2021 ROM hack of Capcom’s 1991 NES original, created by hacker “Peter” and distributed as a patch through romhacking.net. Rather than adding new stages, it strips out the Mega Buster’s charge shot — the defining mechanic Mega Man 4 introduced to the series — and rebalances enemy health throughout so every fight plays with the fast, single-shot pacing of the earlier Mega Man 1-3 trilogy. The story is unchanged: Dr. Wily is secretly behind the threat of the mysterious Dr. Cossack, and Mega Man must defeat eight Robot Masters and their fortresses to stop him.

How to Play

Fight through each Robot Master’s stage, collect their weapon, and use it against the Master it’s strong against, just like the original game. Because the charge shot is gone, there’s no reason to hold the fire button waiting for a charge — enemies here were rebalanced around quick, repeated single shots instead.

Keyboard controls:

• Arrow keys — move / climb ladders
• Z — B button (shoot)  |  X — A button (jump)
• Enter — Start  |  Shift — Select (cycle weapons)

Tips

• Weapon match-ups from the original Mega Man 4 still apply, so target each Robot Master with the weapon it’s weak against rather than relying on the buster alone.
• Without a charge shot to fall back on, keep tapping fire steadily during boss fights instead of pausing to “charge up” out of habit — the rebalanced enemy health expects a steady stream of hits.
