Released for the SNES in 1993, MechWarrior is a first-person tactical simulation game developed by Beam Software set within the BattleTech universe. As a mercenary MechWarrior, players pilot heavily armed, massive mechanized fighting vehicles from a cockpit view across various planets, completing contracts to earn credits and upgrade their arsenal while hunting down the rogue Dark Wing lance.
How to play
Your primary objective is to complete assigned mission parametersโsuch as destroying enemy installations or surviving an ambushโwhile managing your BattleMech’s heat levels to prevent reactor shutdowns. In the browser, the standard SNES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to steer your Mech, Z and X to fire your equipped weapons, and A and S to switch targets or cycle through weapon groups. The Q and W keys (L and R buttons) rotate your torso independently from your legs, which is critical for strafing enemies.
Tips
- Manage your heat: Firing energy weapons generates significant heat. Alternate with ballistic weapons or take cover to let your heat gauge drop, as overheating leaves you completely vulnerable.
- Target the legs: Enemy Mechs can be disabled much faster by focusing your fire on their legs rather than trying to chew through their heavy central armor.
- Upgrade wisely: Early on, prioritize buying better heat sinks and armor over heavier weapons to ensure you can survive prolonged engagements in the tougher missions.
