Released in 1988 by Konami for the NES, Life Force (originally known as Salamander in Japan) is a classic space shooter that builds upon the legendary Gradius series. It stands out in the shoot ’em up genre by seamlessly alternating between horizontal and vertical scrolling stages, taking players through a bizarre mix of mechanical and biological alien environments. Notably, it also features a simultaneous two-player cooperative mode, allowing you and a friend to pilot the Vic Viper and Lord British starfighters together against the Zelos armada.
How to Play
Your objective is to navigate through six challenging stages, defeat the boss at the end of each, and ultimately destroy the alien core. Defeating certain enemy formations drops power-up pods; collecting these advances your selection meter at the bottom of the screen, allowing you to choose upgrades like Speed Up, Missiles, Lasers, and Options. For the browser emulator, use the Arrow Keys to move your ship. Press Z (mapped to the NES B button) to fire your weapons, X (the A button) to activate the currently highlighted power-up on your meter, and Enter for Start.
Tips
- The famous Konami Code works on the title screen! Enter Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Z, X, Enter to start the game with 30 lives, which is incredibly helpful for surviving the later stages.
- Prioritize acquiring “Option” power-ups as soon as possible. These glowing orbs follow your ship’s movement and duplicate your current firepower without taking damage themselves.
- Don’t increase your ship’s speed too many times. Moving too fast can make it difficult to navigate through the game’s tight, maze-like biological corridors.
