Game description:

Life Force is a scrolling shoot ’em up developed and published by Konami for the NES in 1986. Set inside a colossal alien organism threatening Earth, the game sends your spacecraft through six stages that alternate between horizontal and vertical scrolling — travelling through volcanic caverns, biological corridors, and increasingly hostile environments on the way to the creature’s core.

How to play

Survive each stage’s enemy waves and destroy the boss waiting at the end. Defeated enemies drop capsules that charge a Gradius-style power-up bar at the top of the screen. When the cursor rests on an upgrade you want — Speed Up, Missile, Double, Laser, Option, or Shield — press the activate button to claim it. Upgrades stay with you until you die; death resets your loadout to nothing.

Tips

  • Prioritise Options. Each Option pod orbits your ship and mirrors your fire in every direction you shoot. Two Options effectively triple your damage output — pursue them early above all other upgrades.
  • Guard your loadout. Death resets every power-up, and stages are tuned for a powered ship. Losing your Options and Laser mid-stage often cascades into more deaths — play conservatively when you are at full strength.
  • Moderate your Speed Ups. One Speed Up early helps you dodge enemy fire; two or more makes precise movement in tight formations much harder. Stop stacking speed once you can comfortably manoeuvre.
