Life Force – Salamander is a classic scrolling shooter developed by Konami for the NES. As a celebrated spin-off to the Gradius series, the game offers a unique mix of horizontal and vertical scrolling stages. You pilot the Vic Viper or Lord British starfighters, battling through organic, alien landscapes and picking up power-up capsules to selectively upgrade your ship’s speed, missiles, lasers, and protective force fields.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive six intense stages, defeating the boss at the end of each while avoiding enemy fire and moving terrain. In the browser, the NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move your ship, Z and X for your A and B buttons (to shoot and activate the highlighted power-up from your meter), Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.
Tips
- The Konami Code: At the title screen, press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start to begin the game with 30 lives.
- Prioritize Speed and Options: Upgrade your speed once or twice early on to dodge faster enemies, then focus on getting “Options” (glowing orbs that follow your ship and mimic your attacks) to multiply your firepower.
- Ripple vs. Laser: The Ripple Laser expands as it travels, making it excellent for clearing wide swaths of weak enemies, while the standard Laser is better for piercing through tougher foes.
