Gunstar Heroes is a legendary run-and-gun shooter developed by Treasure and released for the Sega Genesis in 1993. Known for its frantic, high-speed gameplay and massive multi-stage boss fights, the game pushes the console’s hardware to its limits with spectacular visual effects.
How to play
Before starting, you choose a shooting style: Free Shot (move while firing) or Fixed Shot (stand in place to aim in eight directions). The core of the combat is the weapon combination system. You can carry two of the four base weapon types (Force, Lightning, Chaser, and Fire) and combine them to create unique attacks, such as homing lasers or explosive bursts. Use the arrow keys to move, press Z to jump, X to shoot, and S to swap or combine your weapons. You can also grab and throw enemies when in close quarters.
Tips
- The Lightning and Chaser weapon combination creates a powerful homing laser that easily clears screens of enemies and tracks fast-moving bosses.
- Don’t ignore your melee attacks. Sliding (Down + Z) and throwing enemies deal massive damage and provide brief moments of invincibility.
- Fixed Shot is generally safer for boss fights since you can plant your feet and aim diagonally without walking into danger.
