Game description:

Gryzor (Japan) is a widespread alternate name for the original Japanese Famicom release of Konami’s legendary 1988 run-and-gun shooter, Contra. While Gryzor was the title used for European computer ports, this specific ROM label points to the Japanese Contra, famous for utilizing Konami’s custom VRC2 mapper chip to add animated backgrounds, cutscenes, and a level-select feature missing from the standard Western NES release.

How to play

As a highly-trained commando, you must blast your way through enemy forces and alien threats using a variety of weapon power-ups.

  • Arrow Keys: Move and aim (including diagonally)
  • Z or X: Jump
  • X or Z: Shoot
  • Enter: Pause / Start

Tips

  • Hold Down while pressing Jump to drop through certain floors and avoid enemy fire.
  • The Spread Gun (S) is arguably the most powerful and versatile weapon; once you have it, avoid accidentally picking up lesser power-ups like the Laser (L).
  • In the pseudo-3D base stages, you must destroy the blinking sensors on the back wall to disable the force fields and advance.
