Game description:

Golf is a seminal 1984 sports game developed and published by Nintendo for the NES. Programmed by Satoru Iwata, it introduced the iconic three-click swing meterโ€”first click to start the swing, second to set power, and third to set shot accuracyโ€”a mechanic that became the universal standard for golf video games. Featuring an 18-hole course, dynamic wind conditions, and contoured putting greens, the game supports single-player Stroke Play as well as two-player Stroke Play and Match Play modes.

How to Play

The objective is to complete 18 holes in as few strokes as possible. Before hitting your ball, adjust your stance to aim your drive and select the proper club for your distance. Press the swing button once to start the swing bar, press it again at your desired shot distance, and time your third press precisely at the baseline marker to execute a straight hit. Missing the marker causes a slice or hook. Default browser controls for NES emulation:

  • Aim Stance (D-Pad Left/Right): Left / Right Arrow Keys
  • Select Club (D-Pad Up/Down): Up / Down Arrow Keys
  • Swing / Confirm (A Button): X Key
  • Toggle Course Map (B Button): Z Key
  • Select Mode: Shift Key
  • Start / Pause: Enter Key

Tips

  • Master the Swing Meter: Time your third press on the swing bar right at the baseline line. Pressing early hook-shots to the left, while pressing late slices your ball to the right.
  • Account for Wind and Green Slopes: Check the wind indicator before choosing your aim, and inspect the arrow grids on putting greens to adjust for slope breaks toward the cup.
  • Choose the Right Recovery Club: Switch to a Sand Wedge (SW) in sand traps or Pitching Wedge (PW) in thick rough, as drivers and low irons lose significant distance from hazard lies.
