Ghouls ’N Ghosts is a side-scrolling dark fantasy platformer released by Capcom for the Sega Genesis in 1988. As the heroic knight Sir Arthur, players battle through hordes of undead and demonic creatures to rescue Princess Prin-Prin and reclaim stolen souls from the demon lord Lucifer. Renowned for its challenging platforming, dark gothic visual design, and deliberate jump mechanics, it stands as one of the definitive arcade action titles of the 16-bit era.
How to Play
Guide Arthur through five grueling stages to reach the demon castle. Arthur can fire weapons in four directions—including straight up and downward while mid-air. Taking a single hit destroys Arthur’s armor, leaving him in his boxer shorts, while a second hit is lethal. Upgrading to the Golden Armor enables powerful magic attacks by holding down the attack button. Defeating Lucifer requires clearing the game a second time to unlock and use the Goddess Bracelet in the final battle.
Controls
In-browser controls map the Sega Genesis gamepad to your keyboard:
- D-Pad (Arrow Keys): Move Arthur, crouch, and aim attacks up or down
- X (Gamepad B): Attack (throw current weapon / hold to charge magic with Golden Armor)
- Z (Gamepad C) / S (Gamepad A): Jump
- Enter (Start): Start game / Pause
Tips & Strategy
- Master vertical attacks: Unlike in the original Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Arthur can shoot straight upward while standing or downward while jumping, making it much easier to clear airborne enemies and overhead traps.
- Choose weapons carefully: The Dagger features the fastest rate of fire and high damage output, while the Golden Armor’s magic varies by weapon. Avoid picking up the slow, arcing Torch unless necessary.
- Prepare for the second loop: After clearing Stage 5, the game restarts from Stage 1. You must obtain the Goddess Bracelet magic on the second playthrough to shatter Lucifer’s barrier in the true final battle.
