Ghosts ‘n Goblins is the legendary run-and-gun platformer developed by Capcom and released for the NES in 1986. Known as one of the most notoriously difficult games of its era, you take control of the valiant knight Arthur as he battles his way through a ghoul-infested demon realm to rescue Princess Prin-Prin. With its relentless enemies, classic chiptune soundtrack, and the infamous requirement to beat the game twice to see the true ending, it remains a definitive test of retro gaming skill.
How to play
The objective is to guide Arthur through six side-scrolling stages, defeating bosses and dodging endless streams of monsters. You lose your armor upon taking a hit, leaving you in your boxers, and a second hit costs you a life.
- D-pad (Arrow Keys): Move Arthur and climb ladders.
- A Button (Z): Jump to navigate platforms and avoid enemies.
- B Button (X): Throw your current weapon (lances, daggers, torches, etc.).
- Start (Enter): Pause the game.
Tips
- Prioritize the Dagger: The dagger is arguably the best weapon in the game due to its fast travel speed and the ability to have multiple projectiles on screen at once.
- Avoid the Torch: The torch arcs in a short trajectory and lingers on the ground, preventing you from throwing another until it dissipates. It leaves you highly vulnerable.
- Watch your jumps: You cannot alter your momentum in mid-air once you commit to a jump. Time your leaps carefully.
