Game description:

F1 Circus is a top-down Formula 1 racing game developed by Make Software and published by Nichibutsu for the NES in 1992. Originally released on the PC Engine, this Famicom port brings fast-paced, bird’s-eye view action to the 8-bit console. Players can compete in a World Championship across 15 different courses, adjust their machine setup, and manage vehicle damage. The game also features a unique Constructors mode where you take on the role of a team manager while the computer handles the driving.

How to Play

The objective is to win the championship by mastering the high-speed top-down perspective and maintaining your car’s condition. The NES controls map directly to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to steer, accelerate, and brake. Press Z and X (mapped to A and B) for your primary actions, and use Enter and Shift for Start and Select. In Constructors mode, your focus shifts from direct driving to giving strategic pit stop and setup commands.

Tips

  • Master the Setup: Before each race, take time to adjust your car’s aerodynamics and tires. A proper setup is critical for handling the sharp corners inherent to the overhead view.
  • Watch Your Damage: Vehicle damage directly affects your performance. Driving recklessly will force you into the pits, costing valuable time, so prioritize clean racing over aggressive passes.
