Game description:

Eye of the Beholder is a classic first-person dungeon-crawling RPG developed by Westwood Associates in 1991 for DOS. Based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset, the game tasks you with leading a party of four adventurers into the perilous sewers and dungeons beneath Waterdeep to defeat the evil beholder Xanathar. As you descend deeper, you recruit up to two additional companions, solve environmental puzzles, and battle monsters in real-time combat.

How to play

You explore the dungeon grid step-by-step from a first-person perspective, interacting with the environment using an on-screen cursor to pick up items, press buttons, and attack. Combat happens in real-time, requiring you to click on characters’ weapons or spells to act. Position heavily armored fighters in the front two slots to absorb damage, while your mages and clerics attack or cast spells from the back. The game uses standard DOS keyboard controls, and you can press Right Alt + Enter to toggle fullscreen.

Tips

  • Balance your party: A strong starting setup includes two frontline fighters (Paladin/Fighter), a Cleric for essential healing, and a Mage for ranged damage.
  • Search carefully: Many walls contain small, hard-to-see brick buttons or pressure plates that reveal secret rooms, powerful gear, and shortcuts.
  • Manage your rations: Resting is required to memorize spells and heal, but your party must consume food to do so. Only rest when necessary to conserve your supplies.
