Brought to DOS by Sega in 1989, Golden Axe is a classic fantasy action beat ’em up where players choose from three warriors—a barbarian, an amazon, or a dwarf—to battle across the land of Yuria. While this PC port lacks the graphical fidelity of the arcade or console versions, it retains the core hack-and-slash gameplay, rideable beasts, and devastating magic attacks that defined the series.

How to play

Defeat the tyrant Death Adder by fighting through side-scrolling stages using melee combos and magic. The game uses standard DOS keyboard mapping for movement, attacking, jumping, and casting spells (press ‘Right Alt’ + ‘Enter’ for fullscreen). Collect magic potions from small thieves running across the screen to charge your character’s elemental attack.

Tips

• Wait for enemies to group up on one side of the screen before casting magic to maximize the damage dealt.
• Dash attacks are excellent for crowd control and knocking down multiple foes at once.
• When riding a mount, use its tail whip or fire breath to keep enemies safely out of melee range.
