Dragon Scroll: Yomigaerishi Maryuu is a notoriously cryptic action role-playing game developed by Konami and released for the Famicom (NES) in 1987. Unfolding from a top-down perspective similar to The Legend of Zelda, the game drops you into a vast, non-linear world filled with secrets. As a hero tasked with reviving the ancient Magic Dragon, you must explore five distinct regions, fight enemies to gain experience, and gather hidden magic spells and items to progress.
How to Play
Your objective is to explore the world, defeat enemies to level up your health and magic capacity, and solve obscure puzzles to find the eight magic scrolls required to awaken the dragon. The default NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to attack with your staff, and X to cast your currently equipped magic. Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Shoot the statues: Many of the game’s crucial items and secrets are hidden inside statues scattered across the map. Attack every statue you see to reveal hidden stairs or items.
- Find the Boots early: Your default walking speed is painfully slow. Prioritize exploring to find the Boots as soon as possible, which will make traversing the world significantly easier.
- Grind for experience: The difficulty increases dramatically as you move from the Forest Kingdom to new areas. Take time to defeat enemies to increase your maximum health and magic reserves.
