Released for the SNES in 1993 by Enix and Chunsoft, Dragon Quest I & II is a 16-bit remake of the first two foundational role-playing games in the legendary series. This compilation updates the 8-bit originals with vastly improved graphics, an orchestrated soundtrack, and rebalanced gameplay that reduces the need for heavy grinding. Players first explore Alefgard as a lone hero destined to defeat the Dragonlord, before embarking on a larger, party-based adventure in the sequel.
How to play
Both games follow classic turn-based RPG mechanics where you explore the world, fight monsters in random encounters, and upgrade your equipment. Navigate the overworld and menus using the arrow keys, and confirm your actions in battle with the Z key (mapped to the SNES A button). You can cancel selections or open the main menu with the X key (B button).
Tips
Talk to every NPC you encounter, as their dialogue provides essential clues for finding key items and progressing the story. In the first game, always carry a few Torches and Magic Keys before delving into deep dungeons. In the second game, prioritize keeping the Princess of Moonbrooke alive, as her healing magic is crucial for surviving long battles.
