Game description:

Dragon Ball Z: Kyoushuu! Saiya Jin (often translated as Assault of the Saiyans) is a unique card-based RPG released for the NES in 1990. Following the events of the anime’s Saiyan Saga, players take control of Goku, Piccolo, Gohan, and the rest of the Z Fighters as they prepare for the arrival of Vegeta and Nappa. Rather than traditional turn-based menus, the game uses a distinct card system where a randomly drawn hand dictates both your movement across the board-game-style world map and your offensive and defensive power in cinematic battles. This version features a complete English translation, making the story accessible directly in your browser.

How to Play

Your goal is to guide the Z Fighters through the story, leveling up their battle power to defeat the Saiyan invaders. Your hand of cards controls everything: the stars at the top determine your movement spaces and attack strength, while the symbol at the bottom dictates your defense. To play this NES classic, use the arrow keys to navigate menus and the map. Press Z (A button) to confirm actions or select cards, X (B button) to cancel, and Enter (Start) to pause or access the main menu.

Tips

  • Match the kanji symbol on a card with a character’s specific martial arts school (like Goku’s “Kame” or Piccolo’s “Ma”) to boost their attack power or trigger a powerful multi-target strike.
  • Don’t rush to the boss nodes on the map. Spend time moving back and forth to trigger random encounters, as you will need the extra levels and battle power to survive against Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta.
  • Save cards with high defense values (the bottom symbol) for boss fights to reduce the massive damage they can deal to your weaker party members.
