Dr. Chaos – Jigoku no Tobira is a cult-classic action-adventure game released in 1987 for the Famicom Disk System and later the NES. Developed by Marionette, the game follows Michael Chaos as he searches a sprawling, monster-infested mansion for his missing brother, Dr. Ginn Chaos. The gameplay is uniquely divided into two styles: side-scrolling platforming in the mansion's hallways, and first-person point-and-click exploration when you enter individual rooms to search for items, weapons, and hidden warp zones.
How to Play
Your objective is to navigate the mansion, locate warp zones in the various rooms, and collect pieces of a special weapon to seal the gates to hell. The controls follow the standard NES layout. In the side-scrolling sections, use the D-pad (Arrow Keys) to move, A (Z) to jump, and B (X) to attack. When inside a room, use the D-pad to move your cursor to interact with the environment, search for secrets, and manage your inventory.
Tips
- Map the mansion: The layout of the rooms and the locations of the warp zones can be cryptic and confusing. Drawing a physical map will save you a lot of backtracking.
- Search thoroughly: In the first-person room segments, be sure to hit and open everything you can. Essential items and health upgrades are often hidden in secret compartments or require specific actions to reveal.
