Developed by Midway Games and released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64, Doom 64 is a standalone first-person shooter that builds upon the iconic foundation of the original series. Rather than simply porting the PC classic, this entry features an entirely original campaign, redesigned sprites, and a distinctly darker, more atmospheric tone. Players once again step into the role of the solitary space marine, tasked with exploring labyrinthine facilities and fighting off a resurrected demonic invasion led by the formidable Mother Demon.
How to Play
Your objective is to navigate maze-like levels, survive ambushes from demonic forces, find coloured keys to unlock doors, and reach the exit of each stage. The original Nintendo 64 controls use the Analog Stick or D-pad for movement, the Z trigger for firing, and the C-buttons for strafing. When playing in the browser, these are generally mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys for movement, with actions and strafing assigned to nearby keys like Z, X, A, and S.
Tips
- Upgrade the Unmaker: Finding the three hidden Demon Keys scattered across the campaign will upgrade the Unmaker weapon, allowing it to fire multiple powerful lasers that are essential for defeating the final boss.
- Beware of splash damage: The rocket launcher is incredibly powerful but lethal in close quarters. Reserve it for open areas or tough bosses where you have enough room to dodge your own blast radius.
- Check suspicious walls: Many secret areas containing health and powerful weapons are hidden behind walls with slightly mismatched textures. Press the interact button against them to reveal hidden passages.
