Commando is a landmark vertical run-and-gun action game released for DOS in 1985 by Capcom. Dropped behind enemy lines as the lone soldier Super Joe, you are tasked with blasting through waves of enemy troops using only a submachine gun and a handful of grenades. Known for its relentless pacing and high difficulty, it helped define the top-down shooter genre.
How to play
Fight your way to the end of each vertically scrolling stage, surviving ambushes and destroying fortified positions. Movement and combat use the original DOS keyboard layout, allowing you to run in eight directions, fire your primary weapon, and lob grenades over obstacles to clear entrenched enemies.
Tips
- Keep moving: Enemies spawn continuously from all sides. Stopping makes you an easy target, so maintain a steady pace forward while dodging fire.
- Save your grenades: Your grenade supply is limited. Reserve them for heavily fortified pillboxes or enemies hiding behind cover that your bullets cannot reach.
- Learn the layout: While some enemies chase you randomly, the map layouts and major ambushes remain the same. Memorizing these chokepoints is the key to pushing further on each attempt.
