Game description:

Released by Konami for the NES in 1988, Blades of Steel is an arcade-style ice hockey game known for its fast pace, digitized voice samples, and lack of traditional rules. Instead of worrying about icing or offsides, the focus is entirely on aggressive checking, precise passing, and throwing punches when a collision turns into a fistfight.

How to Play

The objective is to outscore the opposing team across three periods. When you have the puck, press Z (NES B button) to shoot and X (NES A button) to pass. On defense, use Z to body-check an opponent and X to switch which skater you control. If two players bump into each other repeatedly, a fight breaks out; press the buttons to punch and the directional arrows to block. The loser of the fight is sent to the penalty box, giving the winning team a power play.

Tips

  • Passing timing: Passes in Blades of Steel are not magnetic. You must aim directly at your teammate and ensure they are moving to intercept the puck, or it will slide right past them.
  • Penalty shots: If a fight breaks out directly in front of the goal, the game skips the brawl and awards a penalty shot to the attacking team.
  • Intermission surprise: If you watch the jumbotron during the second intermission of a match, you may get to play a brief mini-game based on Konami’s space shooter Gradius.
