Best of the Best Championship Karate is a technical kickboxing simulator released by Loriciels for the SNES in 1992. Instead of the fast-paced arcade action typical of its era, it focuses on realistic martial arts simulation where players manage a fighter’s career, train their stats, and customize their moveset. Every match is a methodical test of spacing, timing, and stamina rather than button-mashing.
How to play
The objective is to climb the ranks and win the championship belt by defeating a series of increasingly skilled opponents. Before a fight, you can assign specific strikes and kicks to your directional inputs. In the ring, use the D-pad (mapped to arrow keys) along with the A, B, X, and Y buttons (Z, X, A, S on your keyboard) and shoulder buttons L/R (Q, E) to execute your chosen moves. Pressing Select (Shift) changes the referee’s view, and Start (Enter) pauses the action.
Tips
- Customize your moveset: The default moves might not fit your playstyle. Spend time in the gym assigning strikes you find reliable, particularly quick jabs and sweeping kicks that maintain safe spacing.
- Train between matches: Consistently improve your fighter’s strength, stamina, and reflex stats in the training mini-games, as later opponents will easily overpower a neglected character.
- Manage your stamina: Throwing constant heavy attacks will quickly exhaust your fighter. Focus on blocking, waiting for an opening, and landing precise counter-attacks.
