Astyanax is an action-platformer released for the NES by Jaleco in 1989. As a high school student summoned to the realm of Remlia, you must wield the legendary Bash ax to rescue Princess Rose from the dark wizard Blackhorn. The NES adaptation significantly changes the arcade original’s structure, introducing a magic system, weapon upgrades, and an attack meter that forces you to time your swings for maximum damage.
How to play
Progress through the stages by defeating enemies and bosses to reach Blackhorn’s stronghold. The game features a power meter that depletes when you swing your ax and quickly refills; waiting for it to max out delivers a much more devastating blow.

Tips
- Pace your attacks: Your ax swings deal significantly less damage when the power meter is low. Step back and let the bar refill before striking stronger enemies.
- Master your spells: The Blast spell is great for clearing the screen in a panic, but the Heal spell is often more valuable for surviving longer stages.
- Weapon upgrades: Collect power-ups dropped by enemies to upgrade your ax to stronger forms like the spear and the sword, which have better range and damage.
