Chuuka Taisen is a horizontal shoot ’em up originally developed for arcades by Taito and ported to the Famicom (NES) in 1989. Heavily inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, the game puts you in control of Michael Chen, a martial artist riding a flying cloud. As you scroll through mythological landscapes, you must blast through waves of bizarre enemies and bosses using ki attacks and sub-weapons, entering mid-level shop doors to purchase crucial upgrades.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive the scrolling stages, defeat the boss at the end of each round, and rescue the princess. You can move freely around the screen to dodge projectiles while continuously firing at enemies.
- Move: Arrow keys
- Shoot: Z
- Use Sub-weapon: X
- Start / Pause: Enter
- Select: Shift
Tips
- Visit the shops: Watch out for doors that appear mid-stage. Entering them lets you buy speed upgrades, rapid fire, and powerful secondary weapons using the currency dropped by defeated enemies.
- Manage your hitbox: The cloud’s hitbox is relatively large, so focus on finding safe paths through enemy bullet patterns rather than just rushing forward.
