Game description:

Castlequest is an intricate NES puzzle-platformer developed by ASCII Corporation and released in 1989. As Prince Rafael, players must venture deep into the sprawling 100-room Groken Castle to rescue Princess Margarita from the villainous Mad Mizer. Combining action platforming with grueling logic puzzles, the game challenges players to navigate rooms filled with doors, pushable safes, moving platforms, and deadly guards.

How to Play

The goal is to navigate through all 100 interconnected rooms of Groken Castle, collect keys, and reach Princess Margarita. Every room presents a distinct puzzle: you must push heavy safes to create paths or reach higher platforms, use keys of matching colors to unlock doors, and dodge hostile knights, wizards, and traps.

Controls (NES Browser Mapping):

  • Arrow Keys: Move Prince Rafael, climb ladders, and duck.
  • Z Key (A Button): Jump.
  • X Key (B Button): Attack with your sword or use items.
  • Enter (Start): Pause the game or confirm selections.
  • Shift (Select): Display options or status menu.

Tips

  • Manage keys carefully: Keys are color-coded and limited. Using a key on the wrong door early on can make the castle unwinnable later.
  • Plan safe movements: Heavy safes fall due to gravity and can block ladders or doorways permanently if pushed into tight corners.
  • Watch enemy patrol patterns: Enemies like knights and wizards move along fixed paths. Time your jumps and ladder climbs to bypass them without taking damage.
