Game description:

Developed by Visual Concepts in 1995 for the Sega Genesis, Weaponlord is a pioneering 2D fighting game focused entirely on armed combat. Set in a brutal, dark fantasy world where barbarian warlords battle for supremacy, it distinguishes itself with a deep, complex combat system that predates many modern fighting mechanics. Instead of relying on traditional fireball motions, the game emphasizes weapon clashes, parries, deflects, and offensive counters, requiring a highly tactical approach to each fight.

How to Play

The objective is to defeat a series of rival warriors in one-on-one combat to eventually face the ultimate demonic overlord, Zarak. Use the D-pad (arrow keys) to move and jump, and the Genesis A, B, and C buttons (typically mapped to Z, X, and C on your keyboard) to perform various weapon strikes. Press Start (Enter) to pause. Mastering the defensive mechanics is crucial, as standard blocking leaves you vulnerable to specific thrusts and overheads.

Tips

  • Weapon clashes occur when two strikes meet. Time your follow-up attack carefully during a clash to break through your opponent’s guard.
  • Don’t rely solely on holding back to block. Practice the thrust-blocking and deflection systems to open up counter-attack opportunities.
  • Each character has unique finishing moves that can be executed at the end of a match, similar to the fatality system in Mortal Kombat.
