Wai Wai World is a 1988 Famicom platformer developed and published by Konami as a lighthearted crossover of the company’s own late-’80s cast of characters. It only ever released in Japan, so the ROM hosted here carries Dylan Robley’s fan English translation (v1.0), letting non-Japanese speakers read the game’s text for the first time. You start as Konami Man, or Konami Lady in two-player mode, and choose from six stages, each built around a different Konami series, to free that world’s captive hero using a key you find along the way: Goemon, Simon Belmont, Getsu Fūma, Mikey from The Goonies, Moai-kun, and King Kong.
How to play
Combat and platforming play a lot like the original Castlevania — linear, hazard-filled stages rather than open exploration. Rescuing a hero adds them to your active roster, each with a distinct weapon: Goemon’s tobacco pipe can’t hit downward but can pry open treasure chests; Simon’s whip has more reach but swings slower; Getsu Fūma’s sword can break certain blocks and he also carries a three-shot shuriken sub-weapon; and tiny, weak-hitting Mikey can squeeze through gaps the bigger characters can’t. Konami Man and Lady fight with a kick and a one-shot heat-gun special. Free all six and two closing stages open up: a side-scrolling space shooter, then one final linear level.
On NES, controls default to: D-pad → Arrow keys, jump/attack → Z and X, Start → Enter, Select (switch character) → Shift.
Tips
- Visit Dr. Cinnamon’s lab between stages — it restores your energy and shows each rescued character’s profile before you pick who to send out next.
- Don’t panic if a teammate falls: an NPC named Saimon can revive them for 100 bullets, so it’s worth hoarding ammo rather than spending it all on offense.
