Vigilante is a 1988 arcade beat ’em up from Irem, released here in its World-region Set 1 revision. A spiritual successor to Kung-Fu Master, it casts you as a lone martial artist storming the streets of New York City to rescue your kidnapped girlfriend, Madonna, from the mohawked Skinheads gang and their leader, the Giant Devil.
How to Play
Fight your way through five stages — a street, a junkyard, the Brooklyn Bridge, a back alley, and a rooftop construction site — each ending in a boss encounter. Move with the arrow keys, and punch and kick with Z and X; strike high or low depending on where enemies stand, and use jump kicks to clear crowds. Grab a dropped nunchaku for extra range and power, though a single hit will knock it out of your hands.
Tips
- Don’t get surrounded: enemies close in from both sides, so work to keep them stacked on one side rather than letting them flank you.
- Break chokeholds fast: some Skinheads grab and drain your health — wiggle the direction keys rapidly to shake free.
- Use the nunchaku to clear space, not trade hits: it hits harder and reaches further, but you lose it the instant you’re tagged.
