Developed by Traveller’s Tales and released in 1999, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue is a classic 3D platformer for the PlayStation. As Buzz Lightyear, players explore massive, scaled-up environments based on the movieโsuch as Andy’s house, Al’s Toy Barn, and the airportโon a mission to rescue Woody from a greedy toy collector. The game captures the feeling of being a small toy in a big world, combining platforming with exploration and item collection.
How to Play
The objective in each of the sprawling levels is to collect Pizza Planet tokens. There are five tokens per stage, earned by completing specific tasks: collecting 50 coins for Hamm the piggy bank, finding five hidden items (like Bo Peep’s sheep), winning a race against another toy, defeating a mini-boss, or discovering a hidden token.
Controls:
- Move: D-pad or Analog stick (Arrow keys)
- Jump: X (Tap twice for a double jump)
- Laser: Square (Hold to charge a powerful shot)
- Spin Attack: Circle (Used to deflect certain attacks and hit nearby enemies)
- Look Around: Triangle (Enters first-person view to aim your laser)
Tips
- Unlock Mr. Potato Head’s Power-ups: Keep an eye out for Mr. Potato Head’s missing parts in certain levels. Returning them unlocks essential power-ups like the Cosmic Shield, Hover Boots, and Grappling Hook, which are required to reach some of the trickier Pizza Planet tokens.
- Master the Double Jump: Buzz’s double jump is crucial for navigating high ledges. Wait until you’re at the peak of your first jump before pressing jump again to get the maximum height and distance.
- Charged Laser for Bosses: Regular laser blasts are fine for standard enemies, but holding down the fire button to unleash a charged, homing laser is much safer and more effective against bosses and fast-moving targets.
