Starblade Alpha is an intense, cinematic 3D rail shooter released by Namco for the PlayStation in 1995. Originally an arcade smash hit, this early 3D pioneer puts you in the gunner seat of the FX-01 GeoSword starfighter to defend against the mechanized Red Eye empire. The PlayStation port faithfully recreates the arcade’s dizzying space dogfights while adding optional texture mapping to enhance the originally flat-shaded polygonal graphics.
How to Play
As a rail shooter, your ship’s flight path is handled automatically, leaving you to focus entirely on targeting and shooting. The goal is to survive waves of incoming enemy ships, missiles, and massive capital ship defenses by blasting them before they damage you.
In the browser emulator, use the Arrow keys to move your targeting reticle. Press Z or X to fire your lasers. Use Enter as the Start button to begin the game or pause.
Tips
- Your lasers can shoot down incoming enemy fire and missiles, so prioritize taking out projectiles headed directly at you.
- Hold down the fire button for rapid continuous shooting; there is no penalty for constantly firing as you sweep your reticle across targets.
- Pay attention to the edges of the screen for warning indicators, which give you a split second to react before enemy fighters swoop into view.
