Top Gun: The Second Mission is a 1990 combat flight simulator developed by Konami for the NES. Building on its predecessor, this sequel puts you back in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat as Maverick, tasked with intercepting a new prototype enemy fighter. The game features improved visuals, a full campaign with branching paths, and a one-on-one dogfight mode. You will engage in high-speed aerial combat, dodge incoming missiles, and execute precision aircraft carrier landings.
How to Play
Your objective is to complete each mission by shooting down enemy fighters, bombing ground targets, and destroying the boss at the end of the stage. The game uses standard NES controls mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow keys to steer your jet (flight controls are inverted, so Up pitches down and Down pitches up). Press Z to fire your vulcan cannon and X to launch your selected missiles. Press Enter to pause the action.
Tips
- Listen for the lock-on warning: When an enemy locks onto you, a fast alarm will sound. Quickly fly erratically or change your speed to break their lock before they fire.
- Follow the landing prompts: Carrier landings are easier here than in the first game. Just match the target speed and altitude displayed on your HUD exactly as you approach the runway.
- Conserve your heavy payload: Save your powerful Phoenix missiles for the tough boss encounters at the end of each mission, relying on your machine gun for standard enemies.
