Game description:

Tecmo World Cup ’92 is a fast-paced, arcade-style soccer game developed by SIMS for the Sega Genesis in 1992. As a direct evolution of the arcade title Tecmo World Cup ’90, this Japan-exclusive release focuses on accessible action over deep simulation. You can guide a national team through a group stage and knockout tournament in World Cup mode, or play quick matches in Exhibition mode against the computer or a friend.

How to Play

The game is designed to be pick-up-and-play with a straightforward two-button control scheme focused on positioning rather than complex inputs. You can select from four different formations before a match begins. On your keyboard, use the arrow keys to move your players. Press Z to pass on offense or switch players on defense, and use X to shoot the ball or perform a sliding tackle to regain possession. Enter acts as the Start button.

Tips

  • Exploit the sweet spot: When shooting, aim for the corner opposite to where the goalkeeper is standing. These areas are harder for the keeper to reach in this arcade engine.
  • Aggressive formations: In the early stages of the World Cup mode, picking an attack-heavy formation can quickly overwhelm computer-controlled defenses.
  • Prepare for shootouts: If a knockout stage match ends in a draw, be ready for a penalty shootout consisting of five kicks per side, followed by sudden death.
