Tanigawa Kouji no Shougi Shinan 2 is a shogi (Japanese chess) instruction game for the Famicom, built around real-life professional shogi player Kouji Tanigawa. The series debuted on the Famicom Disk System in November 1987 under the subtitle Meijin e no Michi (“Road to Meijin”); this cartridge edition followed in 1988 from publisher Pony Canyon, letting players learn the game without needing the Disk System add-on.
How to Play
Three modes make up the game: shogi matches against a ladder of computer opponents (beat all of them to unlock a championship series against a Tanigawa character), tsume shogi checkmate puzzles, and tsugi no itte “next move” problems that quiz you on the best move in a given position. Move the board cursor with the arrow keys (D-pad), select and place a piece with Z (A button), cancel a selection with X (B button), and open the in-game menus with Enter (Start).
