Game description:

Super Earth Defense Force is a classic horizontal shoot ’em up developed by Jaleco and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). As Earth faces invasion from the mysterious Azyma Empire, you pilot the XA-1 spacecraft to fight through challenging waves of enemy forces. Distinctive among early 16-bit shooters, the game features a weapon progression system where you gain experience points to level up your chosen arsenal, rather than relying on traditional floating power-ups. You can equip different armaments before each mission, such as Vulcan, Laser, or Homing shots, adding a layer of strategic planning to the arcade action.

How to Play

Your objective is to survive each stage and defeat the end-of-level boss. You control your ship with the arrow keys (D-pad), use Z or X (SNES face buttons) to fire your main weapon, and use the other buttons to cycle the formation of your two satellite pods, which can provide defensive cover or expand your firing range. Press Enter (Start) to pause the game.

Tips

  • Choose your weapon carefully before a stage: Homing is excellent for dealing with scattered popcorn enemies, while Laser deals high concentrated damage against bosses.
  • Adjust your satellite pods based on the situation. Keeping them close provides a defensive shield against incoming fire, while spreading them out covers more of the screen.
  • Prioritize staying alive over chasing down every enemy. Because your weapon experience is tied to survival and consistent damage output, losing a life and having your weapon level drop can make later sections significantly harder.
