Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is an arcade-style flight combat game developed by Factor 5 and LucasArts, originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998. Set between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, players take on the role of Luke Skywalker as he leads the elite Rogue Squadron against the Galactic Empire in a series of intense planetary missions.
How to Play
As an arcade flight shooter, you will pilot various iconic Rebel craft, including the X-wing, Y-wing, A-wing, V-wing, and Snowspeeder. Objectives range from protecting civilian convoys to bombing Imperial installations and dogfighting TIE fighters. In the browser emulator, the N64 analog stick is mapped to the Arrow Keys for steering. The A button (typically mapped to X or your primary action key) fires your blasters, while the B button (often Z) fires secondary weapons like proton torpedoes or ion cannons. Use the R trigger to accelerate and the Z trigger to brake.
Tips
- Close your X-wing’s S-foils (wings) to travel much faster between distant objective points, but remember to open them again before entering combat.
- Don’t waste secondary weapons on standard TIE fighters; save your proton torpedoes and bombs for heavily armored targets like AT-STs or shield generators.
- To defeat AT-AT walkers, you must use the Snowspeeder’s tow cable. Fire the cable at the walker’s legs and fly in tight circles around it until it falls.
