Sonic the Hedgehog 3C (prototype 0517) is a leaked pre-release build of Sega Genesis’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, dated May 17, 1994. Rather than the two separate retail games Sega eventually shipped, this build combines Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles content on a single unfinished cartridge, an early snapshot from before the project was split in two. It was preserved and shared publicly by the Hidden Palace group in 2008, and while much of it plays like a nearly complete adventure, it still carries the rough edges of a cartridge that was never finished.
How to Play
The goal is the same as any Sonic platformer: run Sonic through each zone, collect rings, dodge or destroy Badniks, and reach the end of the act. On a real Genesis pad that means the D-pad to move, the A, B, or C buttons to jump and spin, and Start to pause. In the browser, use the arrow keys to move, Z, X, or C to jump, and Enter to pause.
Tips
- Save carefully. This build only offers six save slots, compared to eight in the finished Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and it doesn’t track or display lives or continues.
- Don’t be alarmed by a couple of specific glitches: Hydrocity Zone’s conveyor belts render with broken graphics, and Icecap Zone’s snowboard intro corrupts Tails’ tiles. Both are known bugs baked into this prototype, not a problem with the emulator.
- Some music and sound effects are placeholder, missing, or different from what you may remember from the final Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles — that’s authentic to this build.
