Game description:

Sid Meier’s Railroad Tycoon is a landmark 1990 strategy simulation developed by MicroProse for DOS. As a budding railway magnate in the 19th century, you are tasked with building a transportation empire across regions like Eastern North America or Europe. You must manage complex supply chains by laying track, purchasing the right locomotives, and routing cargo (such as coal, mail, and passengers) to cities that demand them. Beyond track construction, you also compete against rival barons on the stock market to secure monopolies and expand your operations.

How to play

The game is fully playable using the mouse to navigate menus, build tracks, and manage stations, supplemented by standard keyboard inputs. Your primary objective is to build a profitable network before time runs out. Right-click often serves to back out of menus or access different overlays.

Tips

  • Match supply and demand: Do not just build tracks arbitrarily. Check what resources a town produces and what nearby cities demand. Delivering mail and passengers between major hubs is often a reliable early-game money maker.
  • Mind the terrain: Building track through mountains or over rivers is extremely expensive and slows trains down. Route around difficult terrain when starting out to conserve your limited capital.
  • Play the stock market: Use surplus cash to buy stock in your own company to prevent hostile takeovers, or invest in rival companies to profit from their success.
