Shodan Morita Shougi is a classic Japanese shogi simulation game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1991. Named after prominent programmer Kazurou Morita, known for his strong board game AI, it brings the traditional Japanese strategy game to the 16-bit console with a clean interface and challenging computer opponents.
How to Play
The objective is to checkmate your opponent’s king using standard shogi rules. A unique element of shogi is that captured pieces can be “dropped” back onto the board as your own. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move your cursor across the board. Press the A button (Z key) to select and place a piece, and the B button (X key) to cancel your selection.
Tips
Keep a close eye on your opponent’s captured piece inventory, as they can drop them anywhere on the board for sudden attacks. Also, remember that most pieces can be promoted to a stronger form when they enter the farthest three ranks of the board, drastically changing the flow of the game.
