Game description:

Rogue is the 1980 DOS role-playing game that gave its name to the entire “roguelike” genre. Published by Epyx, this landmark dungeon crawler drops you into the procedurally generated Dungeons of Doom on a quest to retrieve the legendary Amulet of Yendor.

How to play

You explore increasingly dangerous floors of the dungeon, fighting monsters and collecting unidentified items. Movement and combat are turn-based: simply bump into an enemy to attack them. Because every layout, potion, and scroll is randomized each run, adaptation is key to survival.

Controls: The game is controlled by the standard MS-DOS keyboard inputs (using the arrow keys or numpad for movement). For fullscreen, press Right Alt + Enter.

Tips

  • Identify items carefully: Scrolls and potions have randomized colors and labels each run. Test unidentified items when you are in a safe room with full health.
  • Manage your hunger: Food is a finite resource. Explore efficiently and do not linger on empty floors, or your character will starve.
  • Use chokepoints: When fighting multiple monsters, retreat into a narrow corridor so they can only attack you one at a time.
