Game description:

MagMax is a horizontally scrolling shooter developed by Nihon Bussan (Nichibutsu), released in arcades in 1985 and ported to the NES the same year. You pilot the MagMax robot across a hostile mechanical landscape with the goal of reaching and destroying a buried enemy stronghold. What sets it apart from other shooters of the era is its assembly mechanic: your robot starts as a bare chassis and grows into a formidable machine as you collect component parts scattered through each stage.

How to play

Stages alternate between surface runs and underground passages, both scrolling horizontally through waves of enemy robots and aircraft. Along the way, watch for floating parts — picking up a leg section and a cannon attachment assembles a larger, more capable robot with greater firepower and resilience. Taking too many hits strips parts back off, so maintaining the fully built form is a constant pressure. Survive to the underground enemy base and destroy it.

Use the arrow keys to move. Z (B button) fires your weapon. Enter starts the game; Shift is Select.

Tips

  • Make collecting the robot parts a priority — the assembled form is noticeably more capable than the bare chassis, and the difference becomes critical in the later stages.
  • Keep moving laterally; hovering in one spot concentrates enemy fire and reduces your window to grab upgrade parts before they scroll off-screen.
