Game description:

Released in 1992 for DOS, Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge is a fast-paced arcade racing game published by Gremlin Graphics Software. Instead of memorising static circuits, players navigate checkpoint-based races using the innovative Racing Environment Construction System (RECS) to generate custom tracks, allowing for endless combinations of weather, curves, and hills.

How to play

The main objective is to speed through each course and reach the next checkpoint before your timer runs out. You can choose from three iconic vehiclesโ€”the Lotus Esprit S4, Elan SE, or M200 concept carโ€”in either a solo championship, time trial, or two-player split-screen mode. Because DOS games lack a universal controller, keyboard layouts vary; typically, you use the arrow keys to steer, accelerate, and brake. If you are driving with a manual transmission, the Spacebar or Left Alt keys are usually mapped to gear shifting.

Tips

When designing your own courses in the RECS menu, lowering the difficulty parameter grants you significantly more time between checkpoints, making it easier to practice handling sharp turns. While racing, prioritise avoiding road hazards like logs and oil slicksโ€”clipping them will instantly drain your speed and can easily cost you the race in the later stages.
